Spring heat, but our bats were hotter

Day 2 in Black Creek was in one word, HOT. It was a day with ups and downs, wins and losses and 2 in the Park Home Runs.

Game #1 West Raleigh @ South Granville 3-15

West Raleigh 7U's are the first to hit against the South Granville 8U team. Although #9 Payton hit a hard single between 2nd and 3rd, and #12 Sean had a successful bunt to start off our hitting in the 1st, the South Granville team was able to hold us scoreless.

Defensively in the bottom of the 1st we struggled. There were some stand out plays made by #11 "Sticks" DiMeo who had a great catch for the 2nd out of the inning. #17 Ryan had quick feet to make the first out at 1st on a sac bunt and he also had a great catch at pitcher for out #3. #12 Sean also did a great job at catcher.

0-6 South Granville...top of the 2nd

It may have been a little too hot in the 2nd inning and our offense didn't want to come out and play. #28 Brian Rubin had a single over the 3rd basemen's head, but was thrown out on a fielders choice during #2 Garrett's at bat. It is a man on 1st 2 outs and #6 Matt hits a triple to shallow left to score Garrett. We enter the bottom of the 2nd 1-6. Where three great catches were made by #14 Zach at Left Center for out #1, #28 Rubin in Right Field for out #2 and #7 Jacob in Left Field for out #3. #17 Ryan did a good job behind the plate for the 7U's. South Granville was able to squeak out 2 runs and we go into the top of the 3rd 1-8.

The 3rd inning was not our best inning. We were held scoreless and gave up 7 runs. The score is now 1-15. David in Right center had back to back catches for outs 1 and 2. Both Ryan at pitcher and Garrett at catcher were hustling and on their toes looking to make the play at home with bases loaded multiple times through out the inning. In the top of the fourth we tried to start our bats back up. Sean got us started with a single to Right Field, and #14's bomb to right field was able to score #12. #98 Blake kept it going with a single, and #28's hit (which got Blake out on a fielders choice at 2nd was able to score Zach for run #3). #11 Sticks also had a single in the inning, but unfortunately the scoring for West Raleigh had stopped at 3.

South Granville played a great game and the final was 3-15. Next up...South Edgecombe.

South Edgecombe @ West Raleigh 10-16

Game 2 begins. West Raleigh 7U's are the Home Team, and our defense is stead fast in the field.

1st innings great defensive plays were by #32 "G Money" who catches the first batters pop up at 2nd for out #1 and #98 Blake fields a grounder towards third and makes the forced out at 3rd for out #2. And in usual West Raleigh 7U fashion great hustle by our catcher and pitcher #12 Sean (P) and #17 Ryan (C). South Edgecombe though was able to put some runs on the board and we enter the bottom of the 1st down 2 runs.

To start our hitting off in the first #9 Payton gets a single by beating the throw out at first, #12 Sean bunts for a hit and moves Payton over to 2nd. #14 Zach hits a hard fly ball over the 2nd basemen's head for a double scoring #9. #98's at bat gets him out at first on a fielders choice, and was able to score #12 Sean. #28 Brian's single scores #14 Zach and #2 Garrett hits West Raleigh 7U's first IN THE PARK HOME RUN!!!!! Scoring #28 and himself. #11 Sticks also had a pop up that went over the pitchers head for a single, but our scoring had ended at 5 in the 1st.

The top of the second had two great back to back defensive plays by #32 Grayson ("G Money"), who on both plays fielded ground balls hit up the middle and got the out at 1st. But the South Edgecombe's offense had heated up and they took a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the 2nd.

The bottom of the 2nd was a great 1/2 inning for the 7U's as we batted through the line up and had some great hits. #7 Jacob started the inning off with a hard hit ball to the SS, who was unable to make the throw to 1st, #17 Ryan had a clean bunt to take 1st and moved the runner over. #32 "G Money" had a hard hit ball up the middle to score #7. #9 Payton's fly ball to shallow left scored #17 and earned him a single. #12 Murphy hit a ball toward 2nd, bases loaded. Zach's single that was hit past second scored #32 and #9. #98 hit in another run while being the fielders choice out at 1st. #28 Brian's bomb to center field gets him a single and scores Zach. Although this is where the runs ended for the 2nd inning, there were still hits by #2 Garrett who hit one up the middle and #11 "Sticks" who hit his up the 3rd base side.

7-11 Top of the 3rd.

Blakes quick hands in Left Field helped keep the first batter at first after he had hit a hard ground ball to left field. #17 Ryan was key this inning, when fielding 2 slow rollers and getting the first out at second (throw went to #9 Payton who was the Short Stop covering 2nd on the play) and the other to 3rd (#11"Stick" received that throw at bag) getting the lead runner out. But South Edgecombe was able to score 3 more runs before the top of the inning was over.

Could our bats tally up some more runs to help secure our lead?

#7 Jacob, started off the 3rd inning with a bunt and beat the throw at 1st, followed by #17 Ryan's bunt who also made it safely to first. #9 hit a hard grounder up the middle to the pitcher that took a hard bounce and he was able to make it there safely and score #7. #12 Sean hit one over the pitchers head towards 2nd to score #17 (and #9's speed helped him slide safely into 2nd). #14 Zach steps to the plate and with the big rush of his bat he hits a hard line drive to the fence in Center Field for the 2nd in the park HOME RUN of the game scoring #9, #12 and himself! #98 Blake McCain hits a single to the the short stop, #28 hits a hard ball to Left field for a single and.............

TIME!

The game is called due to time and the West Raleigh 7U's take the win 10-16 while still batting in the bottom of the 3rd.

It was a long hot day this past Saturday in Black Creek. Our boys were tired, hot and dirty and were the only 7U team to have won 2 games so far in the tournament.

Sunday's game(s) where all to soon. The single lose elimination part of the tournament was the next day and we were facing tough opposition in the 8U HYAA team. Our boys needed some cool air and a good night sleep. Sunday was going to another long hot day. Could our boys survive?
