Sunday afternoon, heat index is going to be reaching over 107 today and our boys are up against the HYAA Bulldogs 8U team. We knew that neither team would go down easy or quietly in this game. Both teams were there to fight for their spot in the tournament.
The 7U's are first to bat. #9 Paytons speed helps him get to first safely to start the inning. #12 Sean hits one over towards 3rd, 1st and 2nd no outs. #14 Zach hits a TRIPLE to Center Field which scores #9 and #12. #98 Blake's single past 2nd scores #14, this is where the scoring ends although #11 hit the machine for a single. The 7U's go up 3 runs top of the 1st.
The Bulldogs battle back in the bottom of the 1st scoring 3 runs to tie the score. Although we get out of the inning due to strike outs, there was a great play by #98 who had a stop at 3rd on a hard hit ground ball and almost had the play at first.
Top of the 2nd, #7 Jacob starts us off with a bunt to get on first, followed by #17 Ryan's successful bunt, #9 Payton hits a hard grounder up the 3rd base line scoring #7 from 2nd.#14 Zach steps to the plate and hammers a ball past 2nd base scoring #17 and #9 goes in hard sliding into 3rd ("SAFE" shouts the Ump). #2 Garrett hits a ball to shallow Right Field scoring #9. #98 Blake hits a triple scoring #14 and #2. #28 Brian bunts one a foot from home, and as Blake speeds by the catcher who was scrambling for the ball #28 is safe at first and #98 has scored. #11 hits one towards the shortstop who after making a bad throw that goes past 2nd, #28 hurries through 2nd on to 3rd and slides in UNDER the TAG as the 3rd basemen had received the ball, and another "SAFE" call by the ump.
#32 hits one back to the pitcher which scores #28 but leaves him out at first.
#7 Coffin IS BACK UP in the 2nd, driving a hard hit ball back at the pitcher and he beats the throw at 1st. Ryan hits one towards 3rd base scoring #11 and #7 slides in just before the throw to 2nd. Payton hits a a soft grounder back at the pitcher who's arm was not as fast as #9's legs, safe at 1st. #12's hit to shallow right gets dropped by both the RC Fieider and Right Fielder and he makes it safely to 2nd as #7 scores...AND #10 David who was running for Ryan ALSO Slides in UNDER THE TAG AT HOME for another Run! Since I am not sure you have a calculator handy I will help you out...10 runs have scored! We are up 13-3 as we enter the bottom of the 2nd. Where we hold them to zero runs with one guy stranded. #32 "G-Money" charges and grabs the slow roller to pitcher and throws to Garrett at 1st for out #1. #9 Green grabs a line drive at shortstop just before it hits the ground for out #2.
Top of the 3rd 13-3 we are held scoreless. #98 McCain had a single as did #28 Rubin...bottom of the 3rd. The first out was when #9 snagged one at shortstop and throws to #6 Matt at 2nd for the out. #11 "Sticks" grabbed a ball hit towards Shortstop and ran over to tag 3rd for the force out, 2 down. The 3rd out was when #2 Garrett caught a pop up between 1st and 2nd. Zach and David did a great job backing up throughout the inning.
The Bulldogs were still able to score four runs in the bottom of the 3rd and we enter the 4th inning up 13-7.
David starts us off with making it safely to 1st on a hard hit ball towards 3rd. #6 Matt follows up with a BOMB over the Left Fielders head for a triple scoring #10. Payton then hits a double up the third base side scoring #6. #17 Ryan hits one to 2nd, Ryan makes it first, Payton makes it to 3rd. #14 hits a triple to left field scoring #9 and #17 who was knocked down by the Bulldogs 3rd basemen but quickly scrambled to his feet and makes it across home. #2 Garrett gets an RBI by scoring #14 but doesn't beat the throw to 1st.
18-7 bottom of the 4th.
First out of the bottom of the 4th was a hard hit ball to second fielded by #6 Matt who made the throw to #2 at first. The 2nd out is courtesy of #2 Garrett who field a ball hit up the 1st base line and tags the runner on his way to 1st.
The game gets crazy...the Bulldogs are on a roll, their Bats are hot but their to fast footwork worked in out favor. The 3rd out occurred when one of the Bulls Dogs as he rounded 3rd for home did not touch the bag and went home without going back. The inning ends 18-13. And the excitement continues...
Top of the 5th inning, 2 outs on the board and #7 Jacob hits a ball to the Shortstop and beats the throw out at 1st. #17 Ryan had a hit that was simple to hot for the Left Fielder to handle and Ryan makes his way to 3rd as Jacob crosses home plate.
Bottom of the 5th 19-15.
"G-Money" makes the 1st out as he catches a pop up at pitcher. Soon mayhem will follow. (write has to take a deep breath...here we go). After the Bulldogs score their 1st run of the inning, there was a bad throw to first to get the forced out, so the batter rounds first but had no idea of Garrett (our first basemen's) speed. Garrett jumped on the ball that was thrown past him, and catches up to the runner that after realizing #2 had the ball decided to go back to 1st but Garret was there with the tag, then the Bulldogs runner that was on second following the crazy arms of his third base coach heads for 3rd...but Garrett throws a BULLET to #98 Blake who receives the ball and tags THAT runner out at 3rd! We are headed to the 6th...exhale.
#12 Sean hits up towards the pitcher and beats the throw to 1st. Zach's hit gets #12 out on a fielders choice at 2nd. #2 Garrett hits hard up the first baseline so hard that it rolled clear under the fence, Ground rule double. #98 has a sacrifice fly to score #14 Zach and #2 slides in under the tag at 3rd (boy our boys were good at that this game!). #28 hits one past 3rd to score Garrett. #11 hits one to the Shortstop who couldn't handle the heat Sticks had put on it and drops it. Then #32 Grayson (or G-Money to most of you) hits a grounder toward 3rd which scored #28. #7 Jacob hit one past the pitcher to score #11 from second.
We added some padding to our lead...23-15. It is do or die time. Can we hold the 8U Bulldogs and take this win? Not if the Bulldogs could help it.
#11 Sticks fields the ball between 1st and 2nd, makes the throw to Garrett for out #1...but the Bulldogs start scoring, and scoring and scoring. The score is now 23-20...Strike 3 is heard from the ump...two down one to go. The batter swings his bat, clank, the ball rolls to #32 "G-Money" he grabs it, throws to first...Garrett catches the ball and "OUT"!.
The 7U's WIN 23-20 in the 6th inning!!!! We are now headed to face the West Raleigh 8U team for game #2 of the single elimination part of the tournament. We know our "big brothers" are waiting for us.
